If you regularly listen to Duran Duran then you probably wish it was still the 80’s. The English band released its latest album entitled “Paper Gods” Sept., 2015. The album strives for nostalgia and every chord brings you back to big hair and leg warmers, but it also has a more contemporary edge due to the wide assortment of featured guests.
Former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante worked with Duran Duran on the new album. Duran Duran is quoted to have said, “We are all such big fans of John’s work and are honoured to have him adding his magic to the record.”
“Paper Gods” debuted at No.10 on the Billboard Top 200. This is the band’s highest debut in 22 years, hopefully marking a new era filled with success for the chaps across the pond.
As a leading band in the “Second British Invasion,” some might have thought Duran Duran would have disappeared by now, taking with them their interpretation of euro punk-pop, but they are still kicking it super star style.
Joining them on the 12 track album are Mr. Hudson, Kiesza, Janelle Monáe, Nile Rodgers and Jonas Bjerre. The collaboration brings a new twist to 80’s club music. “Pressure Off” is a beautiful blend of classic Duran Duran and modern harmonies provided by Monáe.
If synthno-techno English beats are your jam, this is the album you have been waiting for. If it’s not, it’s still a pretty solid record and I’d recommend checking it out. Try putting on “What are the Chances” and stare longingly into a mirrior, reminiscing about past lovers and fantasizing about what could have been.
Are you looking for a good time? Are you and your girlfriends getting ready to hit the town? Warming up before a big game? Taking the dog for a walk? Seriously, these songs are so universal you can feel anything you want when listening to them. Whether or not that’s a good thing is up to you.
Any band that has influenced artists such as Panic at the Disco!, Brandon Flowers (The Killers) and Franz Ferdinand deserves a chance to penetrate our eardrums with infectious loops and catchy hooks. Come on, even Notorious B.I.G. sampled these guys! The best way to describe this album is to say it is a complicated earworm embedding itself in your synapses warming your brain and body. By all means check it out for yourself, it’s definitely worth it.
