Mark Ronson: My family values
The musician and producer talks about his family

Nick McGrath
The Guardian, Saturday 23 July 2011

I had a somewhat frenetic childhood because my mum and dad split up when I was five and then my mum remarried. My twin sisters from my mum and dad, Charlotte and Samantha, are two years younger than me, then my mum had another two children, who are now 27 and 24, with my stepdad. Then my dad got remarried and had another three children, now aged 23, 21 and 14. And my stepdad had two sons – aged 41 and 30 – from two previous marriages so there were 10 of us altogether. We never lived under the same roof at once but we are all fairly close and there was an effort during the holidays to get as many together as possible.

When my parents lived in London and were still together they went out a lot. It was "everybody back to ours" after the clubs, and sometimes I would wake up and go to school at 7am and I'd come down and my dad was playing chess with Daryl Hall. I didn't realise my family was any different from anyone else's, but looking back – and now that I've had a few hangovers myself – I realise that's why we were told not to wake Mum before three in the afternoon.

My mother was incredibly strict, especially when we moved to New York. Compared with most of the American parents, who seemed so relaxed with their children, my mother was virtually a dictator. I remember the one time I ran away from home, a rumour got out that the drummer from Pearl Jam was coming over to a friend's house. I was 14 and I asked my mum if I could go. It was the same night as the Los Angeles riots had broken out and she was convinced it was going to spread to New York in a matter of hours, but I went anyway as Pearl Jam were my favourite band. Obviously, the drummer never came over, and when I came back she'd changed the locks so I had to stay at various friends' houses for six days until I'd issued a grovelling apology.

I'm grateful that Mum was hard on me. I thought I was having a great time but really I was a rebel without a clue. If she hadn't instilled those strict values in me I don't think I'd have handled my first bit of success and fame as well as I did. I think being taught to be fair and respectful to people was a large part of that.

I never had that wicked stepmother or evil stepfather thing at all. I'm very close to both step-parents and I consider them to be my parents too. You draw the best things from your parents and family. You're going to pick up some of the bad things as well – there's a temper that runs through my dad's side of the family that I'm not especially keen on picking up a giant block of.

Family is the anchor for everything. If I realise that I've gone three days without talking on the phone to my sister Charlotte in New York, I need to call her. And no one can annoy you like your family. They have the power to push buttons and wind you up more than anyone else on the planet – but no one else can make you feel so enriched from being in their company. I hadn't seen my brother Alexander for a while recently and he just turned up in London and surprised me. Part of me was really annoyed because he hadn't called me back for, like, a month and then I saw him and had this tiny burned twinge of hurt, but it disappeared within a minute because that sort of family bond is so much deeper than any other bond.

Mark Ronson посвятил концерт Эми Уайнхаус

Mark Ronson

If you have not yet heard of Mark Ronson then it is high time you climbed out of your rock and took notice for he is perhaps one of the biggest pop stars of a generation. Not only has he produced three of the biggest stars in the world in Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse and Adele, but he can also lay claim to three huge selling albums and his new single like the rest of his repertoire, looks set to be just as big.

I make no secret of my dislike of rap music. Whilst it is a talent to rap quickly and tunefully, it is perhaps the most uncomfortable sound to listen to so upon hearing that the likes of Pharrell Williams, MNDR, Wiley and Wretch 32 were making guest slots on this single I thought that Mark Ronson was straying away from his Indie-dance roots in order to please a new crowd of fans in the urban market.

The opening to the track confirmed my suspicions and as it opens with gentle rapping, I really want to hate it but underneath the rap an insatiable beat is inescapable in grabbing your immediate attention. It is a typical Mark Ronson beat; one that is so simple in construction yet effective in use that you cannot help but get it caught inside your head. Unlike a typical dancefloor beat it is one that is made on simple instruments as though a bomb has gone off in a percussion shop and Ronson himself is directing the instruments back in store in perfect harmony.

The lyrics are just as fun and playful as the music. “I really want to be in your record collection and I’ll do anything I have to just to get there.” It seems to be the plea of an artist to have their music listened to and enjoyed – a plea that surely a star as big as Mark Ronson does not really need to make? The artist tries to prove themselves by listing their traits “My handwriting is second to none/I wear Paco Rabanne like I’m Charlie Sheen.”

Wretch 32 has an opportunity to show how much of a contender he is to take the music world by storm before Christmas with his honest yet brutal account of the music industry stating that “all you want is just to get played.” He reminds us that pop stars and the general public are no different as “in the rain we all get wet and in the snow we’re cold.”

It sounds odd to hear such megastars asking to have their music played and put on your playlist and with a mixture of dance pop rap and hip hop Mark Ronson has created a song that will appeal to a huge number of different people whilst proving his humorous side with his playful lyrics. Anything Mark Ronson will put his hand to will be a success but few songs will actually deserve the success that this track deserves.

August 20, 2011

"The least we can say is that Mark Ronson is some kind of a music genius. He neither anticipated any of his successes, nor does he believe they are true now. After making three succesfull albums, « Here Comes the Fuzz », « Version » and « Record Collection », and producing three of the biggest stars in the world, Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse and Adele, Mark Ronson is now releasing « Record Collection 2012 » his new single on Kitsuné!

Featuring Pharrell Williams, MNDR, Wiley and Wretch 32, this new version of « Record Collection» brings more style and energy to the original version with its stirring tune and lyrics! The single is backed by amazing remixes by some of the hottest acts around, namely CSS, LOGO, Moonlight Matters, Plastic Plates, DATABASE and Perseus and which, according to Ronson himself, are « all certified f***in bangas ! "

And the groom wore candy stripes! Mark Ronson marries his French bride Josephine de la Baume in romantic Provence
Last updated at 4:23 PM on 3rd September 2011

They’re one of the most fashionable couples in the showbiz world, so it was no surprise that Mark Ronson and Josephine de la Baume’s wedding looked like a catwalk show.
The couple were married today in Aix en Provence, in the South of France, and the groom almost outshone the bride in a candy-striped suit and Ray-Ban sunglasses.
But the French actress and singer looked just as glamorous in a low-cut Zac Posen wedding gown and cropped veil.

Josephine had not been shy about announcing her wedding dress designer before the ceremony and told ASOS Magazine: ‘He offered to do it.
‘He’s an amazing friend and I love his dresses, they’re so well fitted. I’m really excited and he’s so excited about it.’

Kate Moss and Lily Allen were among the guests invited to the two-day event that took place near the bride’s home town.
And as guests posed for photographs after the ceremony, the music producer’s fashion designer sister Charlotte Ronson, 34, stood next to Romanian-Canadian model Irina Lazareanu.

Sources have previously said that the newlyweds will split their time between homes in New York and Paris once married.
‘They will still visit London but France will be their European base’, a friend said.
BRIT Award winner Mark, 35, met his 26-year-old bride in 2009 and proposed to her in February of this year.
But the couple managed to pull together their wedding plans fast enough to kick off the ceremony just six months later.

The Agent Provocateur lingerie model has also appeared in Mark’s video for his track The Bike Son, which featured vocals from Kylie Falconer – lead singer of The View.
And the band was asked to play at the couple’s wedding reception today.
Before tying the knot to his French love, Mark previously dated fellow Agent Provocateur model Daisy Lowe, who was not invited to the wedding.
A friend of the model said earlier this year: ‘Daisy and Josephine have met a few times but they are not friends and Mark hasn’t been in touch with Daisy since he became engaged.’

Concert Review: Mark Ronson

Tel Aviv Exhibition Center, August 25.

With smoky red lights, deep bass, and the hum of over 5,000 fans, Mark Ronson & The Business Intl. turned the stadium at The Tel Aviv Exhibition Center from an empty hall, to a raving dance party.

Opening with “Lose it in the End,” a single from their 2010 album Record Collection, Ronson and band began by saying, “Let’s turn this place into New York City Circa 1995. We’re gonna lose our s*** for a minute.”

Lose it they did. The high energy of the neo disco pop carried throughout the night thanks to the talents of MNDR, Rose Elinor Dougall, and Kyle Falconer who make up the Business Intl.

Halfway through the show, Ronson introduced guest performer Boy George, who was welcomed by a deafening, exuberant crowd. In a black suit, purple sequence hat and rocking eye shadow, the one-time 1980s iconic front man for Culture Club performed “Somebody to Love Me” from Record Collection with another guest, Alex Greenwald, and then took it back to the ’80s with a cool rendition of, “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” from Culture Club’s 1982 album, Kissing to Be Clever.

Greenwald, the former front man to the band Phantom Planet, also performed a song of his own; the 2002 hit, “California.” The young, hipster audience was surprisingly ecstatic and not only cheered wildly but sang along to every word.

Ronson, who has worked with many well-known artists like Lily Allen and Robbie Williams, might be best known for producing the landmark 2007 Amy Winehouse album Back to Black. He paid tribute to the late singer towards the end of the show, pausing to say, “Make yourself heard if you like the music of Amy Winehouse! I wouldn’t be here without Amy and her immense talent.”

The band then performed the album’s title song, as well as the well-known hit, “Valerie” from Ronson’s 2007 album, Version.

This visit was not Ronson's first time in Israel, and hopefully not the last.

He certainly seemed thrilled to be back in Tel Aviv :”It is (freaking) good to be here! Let’s make this (freaking) s*** legendary.”

Mark Ronson Wore the Versace for H&M Pink Suit at Last Night's Launch Party
by Nika Mavrody
November 09, 2011

Last night at the Versace for H&M runway show, producer Mark Ronson showed up for the festivities wearing my very favorite look from the entire collection: the head-to-toe powerpuff pink suit.

And he looked amazing. Based on this outfit alone, I would marry him in a second if he would ever have me.

Since Mark Ronson is probably not really on the table for me, I think I might have to get my kicks elsewhere: like, with this suit. I've never really tried shopping in the men's department, and am truly terrified of men's sizing and cuts, but I think I'm going to have to face my fears. Because I need this suit, those shoes, this look! The H&M dressing rooms are calling to me.
